Mixing Micro Beads – My Recipe For Success

Here is a close up picture of my Vintage Fat Book page showing more of the detail and dimension.

VintageFatBook2012SuzanneGlazier2I used 1/8” O’So Sticky Tape all around the edges and coated it with a mixture of micro beads in many colors both translucent and opaque.  Because fat books get handled a lot and pages rub against each other, I painted a coat of clear Diamond Glaze over the beads to help them stay on strong.

Micro Bead Mixology

When I’m creating a mixture of micro beads for a project I always look at the colors that are already there.  In this case I saw primarily brown, orange and pink.  So I started with just a little bit (maybe 1/4 teaspoon) of each color from my shelf that is in those color families.  Copper opaque, orange translucent, rose, brown translucent and brown opaque. I liked it but wanted to bring out the pink more so I added some cranberry translucent to the mix.

Beads don’t have to be the exact same color as your project to be a good accent.  They just need to be from the same family of color.  Once I had the colors figured out I played a little with the ratio, adding in more cranberry and copper since those were the primary family of colors for my design.  The last little thing I like to do is toss in a scoop of randomness.  If you look closely you’ll see little bits of blue and purple opaque. I think that they work nicely when used in tiny amounts so as not to over power the main colors.

So tomorrow will be the next page from our fat book swap – stay tuned!

Vintage Fat Book Swap

Our Pennywise Arts 3rd quarter fat book swap is complete!  With so many different interpretations of “vintage” our book of eight pages from eight players is truly a unique piece of collaborative art.  This is what it looks like all bound together:

Vintage Fatbook 2012

The top page of each book is the page that player created.  This helps me keep it all straight when I’m ready to package and mail the books back.

Each base is a pre cut chipboard shape from Maya Road.  I was inspired by papers from Prima Marketing’s “Almanac Collection”.  This is my page:

I painted my bases white and then rubbed them lightly with Distress Ink. (Maybe Frayed Burlap?)  The background was stamped with a fabulous handwriting sampler from an old Dream Impressions set.

A piece of patterned paper was embossed with a Cuttlebug die and the raised parts were rubbed with the same Distress Ink.

The butterflies and nest have multiple layers to make my page “fat”.  Foam tape keeps the wings in flight and the small butterfly has been covered with O’So Sticky Tape and clear ultra fine micro beads from Pennywise Arts.

I’ll show a close up tomorrow.  This post ended getting too long because I went into the whole process of mixing beads from my edges and decided that would be better as a separate post.

Every day for the next week I will feature the other pages in this fabulous book so keep coming back!

Imagine My Surprise Box

Creative Classes In Paper

Presented by Suzanne Glazier of Pennywise Arts

clip_image002

I’m sure you can imagine that I do a lot of shipping.  To make sure that orders get to their destination in good shape, I use A LOT of packing tape! For years, I have saved the cardboard cores from the tape rolls knowing that they would be great for "something" some day. I do save O'So Sticky Tape rolls too, I just don't go through that as quickly.

Created from scratch (and packing tape cores) this interactive pop up box can be personalized for any greeting, name or power Imagineboxword that students desire.

Actual colors may vary from photo. Allow 2.5 hours to complete.  Price $25 with 5 student minimum.

Students may pre order additional kits to take home for $10 each.

Let your favorite stamp stores know you would like to have me come teach, I’d love to see you!

If you bring a friend to my North Bend, WA studio for a class the 5 student minimum is waived.

P.S. Mail order students need to have adhesive to assemble the box.  Please specify your word/name/greeting when placing an order.   Color requests are welcome and will be met whenever possible.  Current marbled paper options are shown.

All parts, pieces and detailed instructions are included in the class packet. Shipping is additional. $25 for the first kit and $10 for each kit thereafter on the same invoice.  Allow one week processing.  Contact me directly to place a class by mail order.  These are not offered on the website.
